The Aveson Way: Our Values in Action

Woven into the fabric of our school mission is a set of eight guiding values that we call The Aveson Way. The Aveson Way embodies the qualities of a good student, a strong leader and a lifelong learner. These values are the foundation of our mission to provide a well-rounded education that nurtures each student’s mind, body and heart.

At our tuition-free charter schools, our advisors (what we call our teachers), weave these values into daily learning using stories, inquiries and experiences to develop and grow each child’s potential. Here are a few examples of how you’ll see our entire community living The Aveson Way:

🔸Our emphasis on experiential learning, whether through time spent outdoors or on one of our Rites of Passage trips, helps students learn to appreciate our world and its people.

🔸The inclusive culture at Aveson Schools develops empathy and understanding in our TK-12 students. We model “listening to understand” and create opportunities to learn from each other, recognize injustice and advocate for change.

🔸Whether rehearsing lines for Aveson Theater Workshop or pushing through a tough math concept, our students learn to persevere through challenges. They are encouraged and supported to take risks, make mistakes, and try again on their path to true learning.

🔸Our annual Celebration of Learning is an opportunity for Aveson students to reflect upon their learning and share their new knowledge with the school community. We also build mindfulness practices into our daily schedule that encourage students to deepen self-awareness and calm.

🔸All Aveson students have choice in projects, electives, and focus areas, enabling them to explore topics they are passionate about. They ask questions and investigate ideas to get to know themselves and the world in which they live.

🔸Through our rigorous project approach that combines knowledge with practical skills, students at Aveson get to deeply know a topic. And our flexible pacing means that students can move ahead in subjects they excel at or spend extra time mastering challenging areas.

🔸Friday externships, collaborations with organizations like Arts Bridging the Gap, and our robust offering of enrichments and electives invites all TK-12 students to imagine not only what their future might look like beyond the school years, but also how they can transform their learning into community impact.

🔸As each child’s strengths are polished, we create plenty of opportunities for our students to shine. From confidently presenting in our Celebration of Learning to performing in our musical theater or competing on a sports team, Aveson students proudly showcase the truly incredible people they are.

The shared commitment of each member to The Aveson Way makes our small schools an exceptional place to thrive and grow.
