5 Ways An Aveson Education is Transformative
We hear it all the time: Aveson Schools change lives.
Students say its because of the joyful learning, like time spent outdoors with friends or following their curiosity, that fills our days and years.
Families say it’s because of the exceptional advisors (what we call our teachers) that care about what, how, and who they teach.
Graduates say it's because of the strong sense of self they gained in our amazing community that confidently launched them into their next chapter.
And our chickens? Well they tell us it’s the healthy food, sunshine and cuddles from kids that has transformed their lives from ordinary hens into extraordinary birds.
It’s all these things and more that demonstrate the transformative power of the Aveson model of learning that inspires TK-12 students to reach for their personal best and grow into independent learners who are ready to engage as global citizens. Here are 5 ways we’ve developed a model of education that transforms lives.
1. An Aveson Education is Learner-Centered
Rather than viewing children as “empty vessels” to be filled with knowledge, we believe students are competent and have the capacity to shape their education through their own actions and choices. At Aveson, emphasis is placed on the learner - we draw out an individual's needs, strengths and interests in order to shape an education that is both personal and personalized. Aveson advisors act as guides, providing feedback and collaborating with students to create academic goals. Because our curriculum is competency based, students master skills at their own pace, and have the flexibility to move ahead in subjects in which they excel or spend extra time mastering challenging areas.
2. We Teach the Way Kids Learn
Through outdoor learning, a leading arts program and our rigorous project approach, learning at Aveson is about exuberant discovery and limitless opportunity. Our students spend time exploring the world in the ways they know best: hands-on, outdoors and in community with peers and caring teachers. At the high school level, students participate in externships that bridge the gap between learning and doing. Real learning, the kind that lasts for a lifetime, is experiential and meaningful.
3. We Believe in Broadening Perspectives
Whether through travel experiences like our Rite of Passage trips or our welcoming and inclusive school community, students build awareness, empathy and the traits of a good leader as they explore the world and the people in it. Cultural awareness is integrated into lessons and our staff participates in ongoing learning about culturally responsive teaching practices that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.
4. Learning at Aveson is Well-Rounded
Our holistic program develops the whole child: heart, mind and body. Art classes, musical theater and collaborations with organizations like Arts Bridging the Gap bring programs like mural painting, hydroponics, and theater workshops into the curriculum. Outdoor experiences strengthen bodies and an appreciation for our natural world, and our commitment to the Aveson Way means that each child is encouraged to grow into their best self through practices like advisory classes and mindfulness classes.
5. An Aveson Education is Inspiring
Thinking outside of the box is not only encouraged at Aveson, it’s celebrated. Inspiration is found in our musical theater programs, our beautiful spaces that promote wellness and innovation, and each interaction in our caring community. We are constantly inspired by the wisdom and imagination that our students demonstrate, pushing us to make Aveson an ever growing and evolving school that goes above and beyond to inspire students to boldly embrace their talents and make an impact in the world.
