Aveson’s clear mission, its focus on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and student-centeredness along with the ingenuity built into the foundation of its charter, drives Ian to lead Aveson Charter Schools. His passion for student-centered learning and allowing student creativity and curiosity to drive instruction has been the core of his more than 21 years in education. Throughout his career, he has shared the stories and voices of his students through Rethinking Schools publications and conferences to highlight the impact of allowing students to lead their educational experience has on their futures.
His journey as an educator and education leader began as a middle and high school English and history teacher. After nine years in the classroom, he transitioned to education leadership working as a high school principal and head of school in the public and non-profit sectors. In 2015, Ian led La Cañada High School to the National Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence and also helped establish the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Academy the year prior. He also served as the head of school for the International Children’s Academy in Los Angeles where his focus was on full implementation of the inquiry-based Primary Years Program through the International Baccalaureate.
He fervently supports the arts in school, social justice work, and providing space for students to showcase their abilities to change the world for the better.
