Javier Guzman conceived of and leads the Upstream Collaborative, an effort funded by the Stuart Foundation to transform alternative education schools in California. He has supported over twenty-five California schools in implementing internship/apprenticeship programs, establishing personalized learning strategies, and creating communities of practice for participating schools.
Guzman also serves as a regional director for Big Picture Learning where he has led a small team of school design coaches in supporting the largest growth of Big Picture Learning schools in California. His team has doubled the number of schools in the network by adding eight schools in eight distinct districts.
As school principal, Guzman has both started a Big Picture Learning school in New York City and led the redesign of a charter school in Los Angeles. He also spearheaded a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of the whole child, which included a partnership with the David Lynch Foundation to support the Quiet Time/Transcendental Meditation Program, becoming the first school in Los Angeles to adopt such an initiative. He joined the Aveson Board of Directors this year. He resides in Altadena and is the father of an Aveson School of Leaders (ASL) second-grade student.
