Top 10 Reasons to Attend Aveson Schools

Aveson Schools serve TK-12th grade students in the greater Altadena area with a tuition-free transformative education that is growing the next generation of global leaders. Our two campuses, Aveson School of Leaders serving TK-5th grade students, and Aveson Global Leadership Academy serving 6th-12th grade students, provide a warm and wonder-filled environment for all learners. Here are 10 reasons your child can thrive at Aveson:

1. Learning at Aveson is transformative.

As public charter schools we are free to redefine the TK-12 education experience. With our rigorous project approach, a leading arts program and outdoor experiential learning, we’ve transformed the traditional learning model into one that engages minds and uncovers potential.

We cultivate lifelong learners who can think critically, engage authentically, and make meaningful, positive contributions to their community and the world at large.

2. We are a top US school for the arts.

Aveson Global Leadership Academy was recently ranked as a top high school in California and the US for the arts by Niche. We nurture the creativity of every student with access to a variety of arts classes from graffiti to ceramics and so much more. Our renowned Aveson Theater Workshop leads students through a 13 week theater course that culminates in a live performance. Whether a student is a seasoned actor or just dipping their toes in the world of theater, everyone is welcome to participate!

3. Possibilities abound at Aveson.

The Aveson model is one of boundless possibilities. Our students are free to question, explore, experiment, and boldly follow their passions. Want to learn about the electric car world? We’ve got a Friday externship for that. Eager to traverse the globe? You’ll love our yearly Rites of Passage field trips to places like Florence, Italy, and the Navajo Nation. Curious if the culinary arts are your calling? Our robust offering of enrichments and electives encourages all students to discover their passions. When curiosity leads the way, the possibilities are endless.

4. We are a school that listens.

We lift up the voice of every student within our school and we encourage our students to confidently advocate for themselves and their community. We listen to student needs and take action to ensure our schools support every learner. In our democratic learning community, students have a choice in the direction of their learning and act as the architects of their futures.

5. Aveson is a small, safe, inclusive school community.

Children and families from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds are welcomed into our close-knit community, which is guided by a spirit of genuine compassion and acceptance. And our small size provides a safe setting that fosters strong, trusted relationships all the way from TK to graduation and beyond.

6. We’ve got sports, electives & enrichments for everyone.

With over 30 elective courses, including STEM, journalism, sports and arts, everyone can find a new interest to explore. Our TK-5th grade students love our afterschool enrichment programs that include opportunities to learn gardening, arts and a variety of sports.

7. Aveson’s academic program is rigorous and preparatory.

Aveson graduates go on to some of the nation’s top colleges and universities thanks to our challenging academic program that is based on both time-tested and innovative approaches. At Aveson School of Leaders, project based learning helps students apply the knowledge and skills they learn in math, science and language arts to real world problems. Our 6th-12th graders engage in college preparatory classes, languages, externships and our unique Passion Projects, which develop skills like public speaking, planning and responsibility.

8. Strong character and leadership skills are central to our mission.

From the youngest to the oldest, all Aveson students are guided on their journey to become the best version of themselves. Our beloved advisors (what we call our teachers) get to know every student personally and support them to grow into exemplary leaders who demonstrate our Aveson values such as appreciation, empathy, perseverance and reflection.

9. We believe learning is serious fun.

We infuse joy into everything we do at Aveson. Our youngest students spend ample time in the great outdoors, using their imaginations and developing life-long skills while having fun. From field trips to enrichments and plenty of community events (have you heard about our Chicken Fashion Show?!?!) that draw in the whole family, we authentically enjoy the process of learning and growing together.

10. We have chickens. Need we say more?

Our TK-12 students provide our flock of chickens with “around-the-cluck” care, the best food and a healthy outdoor setting to roam and roost - not to mention many playful visits. Students take great pride in protecting the chickens' well-being, and in exchange, the chickens provide an authentic connection to nature, a way to observe life science first-hand and a chance to experience nature's rhythms and cycles. The chickens even act as a grounding and calming presence for students who may need a little extra support (yes, emotional support chickens are a thing, but you can't take them on a plane - we've checked.)
