Aveson School of Leaders provides an exceptional individualized educational experience for students grades K-5. We have established a new model of primary education and created the systems, structure, learning experiences, and tools to move secondary students beyond dependency in learning to become successful independent learners and global leaders. ASL provides students with the flexibility of time, space and resources to meet their learning needs… providing the right instruction for the right student at the right time.
Aveson promotes innovative teaching methods, professional opportunities for teachers, expanded choice for families, and a shift from rule-based to performance-based accountability systems.
Personalized Learning Plans
Each student develops a Personalized Learning Plan, which includes not only academic goals and customized approaches, but also includes behavior and social development goals. Through the combination of standards-based academics, individual student development, and active family involvement, ASL empowers each student to become self-motivated, competent, lifelong learners, while developing a sense of responsibility, increased self-esteem, improved relationships with family and friends, and a healthy lifestyle.

Update on K-2 Programs for 2010-2011:
Dear Prospective K-2 Families,
As announced at the last K-5 Community Forum on March 3rd, and in the Aveson Compass that followed, next year will be an exciting one at Aveson! In keeping with one of our guiding principles… “Vision means seeing what could be and what will be and living the difference” we are offering two new settings to our returning students. Based on long evaluation and discussion by our staff, we have a clearly defined vision and have put that vision into action by offering a choice of two unique learning environments for your child. While we recognize that “change” is often met with some reservation, it is our firm belief that only through change can we best meet each student’s unique needs.
The goal of this correspondence is to explain both environments, offer our families the opportunity to let us know which environment you feel will best serve your children, and reassure you that our staff is also carefully evaluating each child’s needs, exhibited learning style, and considering how each child may be best served during the upcoming school year. As always, we will take seriously any parent’s input with regard to his/her child’s learning experience, but the final placement decision will be made based on our consideration of your preference in conjunction with teacher recommendations and space and availability.
Below are the two learning environments available to K-2 students for the 2010-2011 school year:
First Grade/Second Grade Multi-Age GroupClassroom includes students in First and Second grades exclusively.
Kindergarten students will be offered a separate K-only option.
Students rotate between 2 classrooms (Literacy and Math/Projects).
Each classroom has 1 Teacher Specialist.
The Literacy rooms have the support of 1 adult Teacher’s Aide.
Each room has a 22-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and supports 22 students.
D1 & D3 advisory students will be taught by Thea Ulmer (Math/Projects) & Diane Simonsen (Literacy). D2 & D4 Advisory students will be taught by Cid Hanley (Math/Projects) & Liz Culpepper (Literacy). [Kindergarten students will be taught by Jessica Coker (Math/Projects) & Jennee Sonnenberg (Literacy)].
K-2 Team Taught Multi-Age Classroom
Classroom includes students in K, 1 and 2 (approximately 15 students per grade).
Students do not rotate and instead work throughout the day in our large Aveson Flex Room.
Students learn within a single learning environment.
All learning is facilitated by 2 Team Teachers.
The Team Taught classroom has the support of 1 adult Teacher’s Aide.
The Team Taught classroom has a 22-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and supports 44 students.
Growth in all subject areas is facilitated in an environment that encourages student-directed learning and integrates projects throughout the curriculum.
Meg Cranston-Cuebas and Bo Smythe will lead the Team Taught Classroom.
Both learning environments contain the foundations of the Aveson model: Personal learning plans, project integration, social leadership, and healthy living.
Please contact Meg Cranston-Cuebas at megcranstoncuebas@aveson.org with any questions about the program.
If you feel that the K-2 Team Taught Multi-Age classroom might be a good fit for your child, please send an e-mail indicating your preference by Friday, April 16. Emails should be addressed to K2Classrooms@aveson.org.
Thank you,
The K-2 Aveson Team
